We never know when something will happen in life to redirect our path and mold our character. Phillips Kirk Labor had such an experience in February of 1994. Having completed medical school and diving headlong into his residency, he suddenly found himself deathly ill with an infection in his heart requiring open-heart surgery.
“That experience taught me what it’s like to have my life in someone else’s hands,” he said. “Through thousands of successful eye surgeries, I never want to forget that I have my patients’ most valued sense—their sense of sight—in my hands. My goal for them is a perfect surgery every time.”
This mindset has made Dr. Labor extremely detail-oriented and a stickler for comprehensive testing, carefully evaluating each patient to assure they’re getting the best possible care for the best possible outcome. It also motivated him to put in the extra time, schooling, and effort to obtain not just board certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO), but additionally by the American Board of Eye Surgery (ABES) in the fields of cataract and LASIK surgery.
In private practice since 1996, Dr. Labor has been the first to introduce many ophthalmological breakthroughs in the DFW area, including the world’s first technology to measures vision quality, during cataract surgery. He was the first in Texas to implant the ReZoom premium intraocular lens and the first Texas eye surgeon to use the MKO Melt, an oral sedative that affords IV-free cataract surgery. He was the first in DFW to implant the Verisyse Implantable contact lens, and the first U.S. solo private practitioner to acquire the Ziemer FEMTO LDV surgical laser for use in LASIK surgery. He even has several ophthalmic surgical instruments named after him.
In recognition of his many accomplishments, Dr. Labor was asked to join the prestigious Society for Excellence in Eyecare (SEE) for which he now serves as president. “SEE allows me to collaborate with forward-thinking ophthalmologists across the country, to share ideas, and consult on difficult cases,” Dr. Labor said.
“I am truly blessed to have had so much success doing the thing I love in the place I love,” Dr. Labor concluded.
