NORTHWEST SPINE CENTER
J. Michael Graham, MD, PhD
Dr. J. Michael Graham has been treating adults suffering from spinal problems for 27 years. A board certified and fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon, he specializes in the evaluation and treatment of all problems relating to the spine, including neck and back pain, pinched nerves, degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and neck and back injuries. Utilizing state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment methods, his proficiency lies in minimally invasive spinal reconstructive surgery, minimally invasive outpatient spinal surgery, and artificial disc replacement surgery.
Thousands of patients with physical or neurological impairment from spinal injuries or disease have sought his expertise and treatment. They are reassured by his devotion and commitment to comprehensive spine care, delivered in a comforting, compassionate manner. Dr. Graham’s comprehensive treatment includes a tenacious approach to finding the source of patients’ spinal problems through in-depth evaluation and diagnosis. Once a clear diagnosis is established, an individualized treatment plan is put into action with functional recovery as the goal. He strives to ensure that no patient lives with the pain of untreated spinal injuries or disease.
Although innovative and highly experienced in spinal surgery, Dr. Graham is conservative in his approach. He is a firm believer of nonsurgical management, using medications, physical therapy, and sometimes spinal injections as a first line of treatment.
“Even though I am a surgeon, I spend most of my time helping patients avoid surgery,” he says.
Dr. Graham never operates on a patient unless all nonsurgical treatments have been tried first, and the patient has confirmed that he or she cannot live with the condition that they have.
Well-trained and knowledgeable in his field, Dr. Graham was the first surgeon in Houston and the Woodlands to perform artificial disc replacement surgery. He has since performed hundreds of these operations, as well as minimally invasive spinal surgeries. He appreciates the challenge of establishing an accurate diagnosis and enjoys the gratifying experience of seeing his patients live a full and active life after treatment.
Dr. Graham graduated from the University of Texas, Austin, with a BA in psychology in 1975 and a doctorate in biology and physiology in 1980. He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 1984. An internship and residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston was followed by a fellowship in spinal surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. He established a private orthopaedic practice in spinal care after his fellowship. He is the author of numerous medical publications, is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and is a member of numerous medical associations and societies.
