Lisa B. Fell, AuD
Untreated hearing loss can affect your ability to understand speech and negatively impact social and emotional well-being. This could be what’s happening if you find yourself or someone you love withdrawing from social situations, spending less time with family and friends and shying away from things they used to love, like going to dinner or a movie. Dr. Lisa B. Fell of Audiology Experts, is a Doctor of Audiology that evaluates hearing and takes the time to understand the degree of hearing loss and an individual’s lifestyle so she can recommend solutions for improving quality of life.
Hearing loss can occur gradually.
“A change in a person’s ability to communicate affects the whole family, and often it’s a family member who first notices a change in their loved one,” said Dr. Fell.
Hearing loss can be frustrating, alienating, and fatiguing. Untreated hearing loss has also been linked to doing poorly on memory tests because of the strain involved in trying to hear. Essentially, someone might strain to hear an instruction or conversation and then not remember what they heard. Dr. Fell states, “some research shows a link between hearing loss and dementia.” One Johns Hopkins study found that seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. It’s important that the patient get evaluated.
Hearing loss can happen to anyone – like children, vibrant retirees experiencing natural, age related hearing changes, even young adults still in the workforce.
