Helen Kornmann, MD, PhD, & Matthew Emanuel, MD

Glaucoma Associates of Texas

Glaucoma Associates of Texas (GAT) is a team of ophthalmologists specializing in the medical, laser, and surgical treatment of glaucoma and cataracts. Each of the physicians has completed a clinical glaucoma fellowship, gaining extensive additional training to attain special expertise in the comprehensive management of glaucoma. The doctors not only use traditional medical therapies and surgical techniques, but also offer newer, less invasive approaches as well. GAT, which has been a staple of Dallas and North Texas eyecare for decades, is proud to have an office in Rockwall to serve the surrounding community more effectively and conveniently.

Cataract & Glaucoma Specialists in Rockwall

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. Early treatment, however, can often prevent vision loss. “With the opening of our newest location in Rockwall, our goal is to be available to better serve patients in this area because being diagnosed with glaucoma can cause anxiety and fear,” shared Dr. Helen Kornmann. “We want to protect and preserve your vision if you suffer from this disease.”

“Unfortunately, most people do not show symptoms until significant damage to the eye has already occurred,” Dr. Matthew Emanuel added. “The best defense against glaucoma is to play an active role in your eye health. Know the risk factors and get regular eye exams.”

With more than 60 years of combined experience treating patients with glaucoma and cataracts, the GAT physicians are dedicated to providing their patients with the best possible outcomes. In addition to the medical management of glaucoma, they also have extensive experience in the laser and surgical management of the disease, involved in the development of surgical techniques to treat the myriad forms of glaucoma. Dr. Emanuel also notes the advances in combined cataract and glaucoma care. “Cataracts are a normal part of aging, but patients with cataracts and glaucoma may present certain challenges.” Using their surgical expertise, Dr. Emanuel notes the GAT physicians are specially equipped to maximize patient outcomes. “We see these challenges as an opportunity, frequently combining glaucoma surgery with cataract surgery, reducing patients’ intraocular pressures and often decreasing or eliminating their need for eyedrops. Through minimally invasive techniques, we utilize microscopic-sized incisions and equipment to reduce the incidence of complications and speed up the recovery process.”

Don’t let glaucoma, the “silent thief of sight”, limit your life

Whether visiting for a routine checkup, outpatient consultation, procedure, extended care, or emergency care, Dr. Kornmann encourages all of her patients to take an active role in their eye health.

“Talk to us about your risk factors and learn how often you should have an eye exam. With early diagnosis and appropriate therapy, glaucoma rarely leads to blindness; we want to work with you to control and further protect your vision in the years ahead. Together with you, our physicians and staff look forward to providing you the most advanced and balanced care for your disease.”
