Kien T. Tran MD, PhD

Liberty Dermatology

When it comes to skin cancer detection, treatment, and surgery, Dr. Kien Tran is an expert. After researching skin diseases while obtaining his PhD at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Tran focused his study on clinical dermatology.

“If my patients can learn about detection of skin cancer, they’ll have healthier skin, and it will make a difference in their overall health,” says Dr. Tran.

Skin Cancer Prevention

Sunscreen and sun protection with a hat and protective clothing are important. Utilizing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is imperative. Excessive tanning and sunburns are not recommended. “If using a spray-on sunscreen, it’s vital that you rub it into the skin, not spray it on lightly,” says Dr. Tran. “Even on overcast days one can get a sunburn, and sunscreen makes a difference.”

There are many types of skin cancer such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. However, melanoma, a skin cancer from moles on the body, is the most concerning.

Skin Cancer Detection for Melanoma

“It’s as easy as A-B-C-D-E,” says Dr. Tran. “By paying attention to your existing moles, you take a huge step in detecting changes and making the decision to see a dermatologist.”

A—Asymmetry: “A change in symmetry is one of the early signs of skin cancer,” says Dr. Tran.

B—Border Changes: “Atypical moles develop a rough edge or an uneven border.”

C—Color: If a mole noticeably darkens or has variation in color, get it checked out.

D—Diameter: If a mole is wider than the width of a pencil eraser (5mm), take the time to contact a dermatologist.

E—Evolution: Benign moles look the same over time. If a mole grows or changes, please pay attention to it.

When is it Time to See a Dermatologist?

If you’ve had multiple sunburns, have more than 50 moles on your body, or are over 40 and have never had a comprehensive skin exam, consider scheduling an appointment. “It’s really about prevention and detection,” says Dr. Tran. “If we can help our patients maintain their health then we are fulfilling our mission.”
