Ruth Arumala, DO, OB-GYN
Dr. Arumala’s passion for empowering women was first ignited while in Northern Nigeria. “During my time there, I visited the labor and delivery in a military hospital in Kaduna, Nigeria.” She said, “Due to the early age of marriage in some of the tribes, I observed many teenage girls delivering babies on the floor without the help of a trained professional. I witnessed birth trauma first hand. I wanted to help.”
Then between her third and fourth year of medical school, Dr. Arumala spent a year in Gaborone, Botswana. “I was involved in the women’s health clinics that provided cervical cancer screening and management and learned firsthand the importance of prevention in gynecological cancers.”
Those early experiences motivated Dr. Arumala to pursue a career as a women’s health expert who puts her patients first. “I’ve adopted a holistic style of medicine that considers social, economic, psychological, and behavioral influences that affect each patient,” she said. “I create individualized plans of care that enable each patient to adhere to best practices and achieve desired outcomes, during all stages of life.”
Dr. Arumala is especially passionate about caring for women affected by fibroids, PCOS, infertility, and menopausal symptoms. “I also love walking alongside women during their pregnancy journey.” She said, “My mission is to provide excellent evidence-based medicine in a kind, loving manner regardless of the patient’s race, ethnicity, socioeconomic background, religion, or sexuality. I strive to model excellence in each aspect of my life—for myself, my patients, and the next generation of physicians.”
Dr. Arumala is the host and founder of the Pretty in Pink Podcast: The Modern Woman’s Guide to Health. She considers this podcast (hosted on Apple podcasts, SoundCloud & Spotify) her love project to women across the world. “I discuss issues that affect women—from finance to fashion to fibroids,” she said. “I interview prolific female experts who candidly share their journey and knowledge to empower and encourage our listeners.”
“I’m eternally grateful to have been raised by Dr. Joseph & Dr. Claudia Arumala,” Dr. Arumala said. “As immigrants from Nigeria in their 40s, they modeled a lifestyle of hard work and striving for excellence. My brothers, Samuel and David Arumala, supported my dreams and have always been my biggest cheerleaders. My boyfriend, Kelfala Kanneh, is my number one fan. I’m also thankful to be part of a team that echoes my philosophy of curating a warm, inviting space where patients are valued.”
